Hi all, searched and didn’t find something helpful.
We bought a house in April. House is heated by a forced air furnace / heat pump as well as hydronic heating for the ground floor (slab on grade).
When we first moved in, we had serious sulphur smell issues in the hot water. I swapped the anode out for a powered anode and the smell issue was resolved.
We never used the hydronic system until Christmas this year when we had guests staying over.
Ever since we turned it on and used it, we have a persistent smell of sulphur (rotten eggs). We’ve turned off the hydronic system again, and it just comes and goes periodically.
I’ve check to make sure it’s not a propane leak with a detector, etc and all comes back good. The heat source for everything is electric anyway.
I suspect it’s something to do with the hydronic system since that’s all we touched. It’s a typical setup with water and a recirculating pump. Connecting to incoming cold water from the well to make up any losses, etc.
I’m wondering if I can turn the boiler up to 200F and run it for a couple hours to kill any bacteria that might be in the system and solve the problem ? The system is in concrete, so that’s well above the normal operating temperature and I’m not sure if that would damage anything.
Since the furnace is also in the same utility room, any smell that that system might generate automatically gets distributed throughout the house.
I’m at a loss at what I can do to fix this issue.
If there’s a better place to post this question, please let me know. There’s a hydronic subreddit but it has very few members and no posts like this.
