Apologies is this is entirely the wrong sub - let me know if so.
Had an appalling experience with an electrician earlier today. Had an appliance engineer out to replace a heating element in my oven (not the appalling experience), and he said he couldn't because he did some sort of test both on the oven and other sockets in the kitchen and they aren't earthed. Fair enough - he switched it off and put up a sticker saying it was unsafe, filled in paperwork etc, and advised me to call an electrician to have a look at the overall wiring / earth situation.
Called in an electrician and he told us there is no earth coming into the house (okay), then he switched the oven back on and removed the warning sticker and advised me to DIY the wiring in the un-earthed oven using ebay and youtube (then tried to charge me £300).
I'm not in an actual coma, so obviously I can see that guy is an idiot and giving incredibly dangerous advice. But I am really ill-informed about electrical stuff, don't fully understand the implications of the earthing business, and need someone informed and responsible to tell me what needs to be done. The next total lunatic might be more plausible, so where do I look / what certifications am I looking for to ensure the next electrician I get out is competent?
Thanks so much for any advice.
