They came for coffee yesterday and we were talking about how we seen someone smoking drugs on the TTC a few days back, and from there it kind of evolved into how fucked up the world is.
They then announced that they don’t care anymore, they can either feel relatively okay every day or think about (and I’m paraphrasing here so excuse me): kids getting blown apart in gaza, racism (any of the isms actually), homelessness, climate change and also mentioned they’d dumped their narcan they usually carry with them and they just said their done. They don’t want to hear it, don’t want to be involved, they’re removing themselves from caring about anything that doesn’t affect them.
I had no idea how to respond. I’ve been sitting with it for 24hrs and I’m stumped.
I know asking Reddit for advice on someone who has seemingly lost any empathy for the world is probably a bit stupid, but looking for genuine advice on how to respond, or if I should. Or if anyone else feels this way?
EDIT - i wrote that at 12am thinking no one would really see it haha - thank you for all your insightful and thoughtful responses. I think I didn’t convey that overall I’m just worried for THEM. It was a strange conversation, and while I would never push views on anyone or say they should help, it just all felt so out of the blue. And I think they’re just burnt out and reached their limit. After thinking on it I think they just needed to get it off their chest because I think they feel GUILTY for thinking those things. And they just wanted someone to talk to. So I was never going to say anything to them, other than to let them know I’m here to talk if they need. A lot of people in the comments feel similarly and it feels like we’re ALL burnt the fuck out and struggling, so I’m sending good vibes to everyone! The world is on fire but hopefully we can all find some little bit of peace in our days
