How to budget for toronto?

Post Body

I got a job in Toronto and will be moving from the US. I really dislike long commutes so have been looking at places within 30 minutes (by walking/bicycling or by subway/street car) of the downtown area. The rental prices in that area seem really high for the square footage they offer. However, I am fine with that if that means a convenient and walkable neighborhood. My pre-tax monthly salary is around CAD 6,500 and CAD 4,500 post tax (based on some online calculator) and these places are typically around CAD 2,100 - 2,400. I would like some advice on whether it would be doable as I do not have a good sense of how expensive other necessities in life, e.g. groceries, utilities, occasionally eating out and going out with friends, cost in a place like Toronto. Any advice would be appreciated!
