How to get a standalone car engine

My teenage son would like tinker with an old car engine (not an entire working car).
Where/how can an old engine be obtained? I do realize there are safety concerns, but for now figuring out if/how an engine could be gotten.
(Although cars are the main interest, other motor vehicle engines could an option.)
