Disclaimer: I haven't done so yet, but I really want to.
My older sister has a lot of mental health issues, and my siblings and I walk on eggshells around her. She has a history of self-harm and self-esteem so poor, it makes an abyss look bright.
For example, I once complimented her on how she looked.... and then she started crying, and I asked her astonished what I said wrong. Her response was that she thought I was being sarcastic and making fun of her.
She's gone for a lot of mental health aid in the past, but nothing worked. Recently, she also got engaged to her boyfriend, so I thought things were finally looking up.
But even more recently, I found out she guilt tripped our YOUNGER sister by cutting herself and drawing the words "Fuck You" on the bed.
My little sister woke me up crying in distress, all the while forcing herself to go to school because of an important test.
The reason why my older sister did this? Because she wanted to use the bathroom, and my little sister took too long. So she locked the door, and cut herself in retaliation.
And now I really want to scold my older sister for doing something so appalling, but I know it's wrong. She wouldn't learn anything from hurting others this way; only seeing it as an attack and affirmation that everyone really does hate her (not that she is particularly a nice person to be around).
The easy response is to get help but 1. we don't have the money, 2. we live in Asia, 3. therapy hasn't worked for her.
I'm trying really hard whether to decide to keep quiet so my older sister doesn't do anything more stupid, or scold her because she did something so stupid because of an even stupider reason.
Your mentally ill sister can kill you and only get 7 years. Or maybe 12 weeks! If she is stressed.
So if you want yo be SAFE. DO NOT antagonize her
