Should I get new board shorts tailored?

I bought new board shorts online about a size too big (I get them L after losing weight and thought I would fit 38) and need them in 36. I might not be able to return them (they were bought on sale and the seller doesn't typically have returns on sale items) and want to know if it is a good idea to get them tailored.
