So I'm a class of 2026 (28' if you include 18 months of the military) and had a few questions about military service.
- I know that most Koreans (ones living in Korea and internationally) go to the military after 1 or two years of college. Which is better? If I go after one year, I wouldn't have much time to form bonding relationships w my peers, and if I go after two years when I come back, ill only have one semester to spend with the friends I made the first two years of college.
- This question is a follow-up to the previous one. How do you adjust socially when you come back from the military? I heard a lot of Koreans who come back from the military have a hard time adjusting to college again and spend the remaining years alone... (볡νμ)
- How do I notify US or Canadian colleges, will they know about the military situation, and are there any paperwork that I have to do? (I am not yet decided on which uni to attend)
- I want to join KATUSA, how likely is the lottery system?
I want to hear your stories about how you overcame balancing military and school!!!
Thank you!!!
hello hello am currently serving in the korean military with a semester left of university :')
go as early as you can; i'd recommend going after your first year. sure, you may not have much time to solidify relationships at first but when you come back you'll have three years left to do that. i pushed going to military as much as i could, which is why i only have a semester left to go back to and honestly i'm kinda regretting it
join νμΈνs, there's a bunch of those and also a bunch of 볡νμs too. even with girls there are a couple who take a leave of absence so you won't be the only one that's a few years older. or if you don't wanna be with koreans join whatever other clubs that are on campus and if they aren't korean chances are they won't give a damn about how old you are and if you came back from the military
most universities probably have had students who had to go back home for extended periods of time to complete their military service. if you have a counselor just let them know what's going on and you can apply for a leave of absence until when you think you'll be coming back
KATUSA is stupid hard to get into, but the success rate varies a lot by the month. a lot of koreans sign up for january or feb so that they can go back to university as soon as they get discharged, but the winter months are a lot less competitive. just look up the past rates and do what feels right for you, but in the end it's just entirely luck and you've only got one shot so :/ don't expect on getting in though for your own sanity haha
considering that you're c of '26 i'm assuming you're graduating highschool this year? good on you for thinking of this early on!! and good luck :)
