why do filams and americans in general consider filipinos pacific islanders?

i don’t even think this is up for debate in the philippines—doesn’t pacific islander refer more so to fiji, samoa, micronesia, etc? geographically the philippines is in SE Asia but for some reason there’s a preconception that filipinos aren’t ‘real’ asians

spanish influence and colonization can also serve to invalidate identity
