So, I was playing video games with my friends, just enjoying our time together. Among us, I'm the only Asian, while the others consist of one Hispanic and two white individuals.

During our gaming session, I casually said in Chinese, "你吃饭了吗?" because I simply liked the sound of the phrase. However, one of the white players took offense, claiming that I shouldn't use "fake Chinese" when I'm not fluent in the language.

I explained that I do know some phrases in Chinese, but she insisted it was still racist since I said it randomly and wasn't fluent. To my surprise, the Hispanic player chimed in, agreeing that it was "lowkey racist." I found it puzzling how two non-Asian individuals were accusing me of being Asian racist.

What struck me as even more perplexing was their behavior in the game. When they killed a player with a Chinese character username, they jokingly referred to it as killing my cousin — yet somehow, they didn't see the irony in their action, even when I pointed out that is racist.

So, I'm reaching out to the Asian American community to ask: Am I being racist? If so, could someone please explain?

I think people get “racist remarks” confused with “stereotypical reposes.” Racism by definition mean you feel your race is superior to another race (and that could be any race) not just Asian, White, Hispanic or African American etc. But you sing certain terms or phrases can be stereotypes some good and bad. Like Asians are smart at Math etc. it’s a stereotype but a positive one so Asians are not upset about. But if someone says “Asians can’t drive” that’s a stereotype but by saying that there was maybe a racist undertone since they are imply that their or other races driving skills are superior to Asians.
