We got a VERY scammy sounding text from a Detroit area code phone number after hours on a Friday stating they needed to do an inspection for our claim. The text indicated that the inspector was only available for 3 days and wanted to schedule a Saturday morning appointment. It also included a name and badge number. The name only shows up on a LinkedIn page (as an outside contractor for FEMA) and 1 news article. Between the pushed urgency and out of area non federal number and lack of online presence, my hackles are up and I'm on high alert. We called FEMA's 800 number from their .gov page, but they could only validate that the badge number was real and not provide an associated name.
Has anyone else received anything this red alert scammy? Is is actually legit? Am I wrong to require that this person provides me back my FEMA claim number or some sort of verification? Anyone can show up with a fake badge and FEMA vest.
