Some points were made during the first part of this debate that I would like to address.
1: it's not about me being in a hurry, or arriving to my destination 5 minutes earlier. I'm rarely in a hurry. It's about me having to watch for joyriding cyclists going 35mph under the speed limit, often in large groups, in a blind curve.
Now think about it, imagine that you're in a group of cyclists, enjoying a nice leisurely stroll going 10mph in a 45mph zone. A car going 40-45mph approaches and goes to overtake you left of center, another car approaching in the opposite lane is going 55mph (some people speed & drive recklessly) the incoming party doesn't know why this vehicle is in their lane, and chaos ensues. Somebody gets hurt. That's what your leisurely joyrides are risking motorist saf
2: overtaking another "vehicle" left from center crossing over the solid yellow lines is actually illegal. The two solid yellow lines indicate that passing either side going left to center is prohibited.
3: I worry for your safety, too, cyclists. We have some idiot drivers around here who speed and other such things, and don't pay attention. By going 15mph in a 45mph in a blind curve you risk being hit from behind. Yall must be really ballsy, honestly. I don't want that to happen to you.
4: just because the law includes cyclists as motorists (backwards, right?) Doesn't make it sensible or okay for cyclists to joyride on dangerous, narrow country roads where semi trucks are often coming through and there is NO BIKE LANE.
Yall have no recourse here. Nothing makes it ok. It's brash and selfish and irresponsible to do what you do, which is compromise everybody's safety and shift responsibility to the other party. The main point is you shouldn't be going 15-20 in a 45-55mph zone AT ALL. The fact of the matter is that your presence on the road is dangerous. There is no bike lane, therefore there isn't space. It's kind of hard for a semi truck to share the space with a group of 12 cyclists going 1/4 the speed limit. It's just common sense.
My main point is that I'm not upset about the inconvenience of it, I just worry about the obvious safety concerns for all parties involved.
I don't want to break the law or risk my safety just to pass a group of people who shouldn't be there.
If you got in a head on collision passing a group of cyclists, it would be your fault. Yes I know that you're supposed to have a clear line of sight, but how good is that when the person you collided with is going 15-20mph above the speed limit? This happens a lot.
Again, this is not about the inconvenience. I can deal with the inconvenience. I'm talking about the obvious, practical safety concerns that arise from cyclists unwarranted, unwanted, nonsensical presence on roads (river road in particular)
