My great-grandfather J.E.S. Thorpe was the chief engineer for ALCOA in the early 1900ā€™s and he oversaw the building of Lake Glenville and its dam in Cashiers, and the High Rock dam on the Yadtkin River outside of Charlotte. Nobody really knows who he is, and I think he was fucking awesome!

He did a lot more but the info is hard to find. He oversaw the creation of Nantahala Power and Light and was its first president too. NP&L provided power to a large section of western NC. I just think his efforts deserve sharing. He was a penniless English immigrant maverick who rolled the dice in 1911 by moving to Franklin, NC., and Iā€™m proud to be a descendent of his.
