I had an interview on Monday for a job with a 22 hour contract. Due to my previous experience I was told they really wanted me on counter, and a friend of mine who currently works at the store put in a very good word for me. Interview went well, and it was pretty much insinuated the job would be mine, as my experience was exactly what they wanted, with a view to progress me up the chain eventually. I was told he would be in contact with a definite answer.
Received an email on Tuesday asking me for my right to work, so a dbs could be performed for screening before proceeding to the next stage. Which I took as a very positive sign. Though due to my current work and child care commitments I wasn't able to look at my emails till yesterday early afternoon. Went to go complete the required information for the DBs only to receive an email yesterday mid afternoon saying "We are sorry you no longer want to work for us, good luck for the future and apply again" etc etc. Still managed to complete the uploading of my right to work regardless!
A bit confused I contacted the store asap, only to be greeted by another manager, who told me he was told to tell me the issue was over my notice period!? This bemused me even more, especially as there was nothing insinuated in the interview that my notice period would be an issue. The only thing mentioned was the fact I would need availability on weekends, which wasn't an issue. I wasn't even told when the expected start date would be, with no real discussion on this. I do have leave to take which would mean my notice period wouldn't really be an issue, as I would have taken the notice period as leave but wasn't really given a chance to explain this.
The manager on the phone was also confused as I had received the email requesting my right to work to perform a dbs. He said that they still had plenty of opportunities available and reapply, but in my case he suggested I also try to sort it out with the manager dealing with it on Friday when he is next in. Obviously you wouldn't waste money on a DBs for a candidate you wouldn't hire. My friend also thought it was a weird situation, and said he doesn't think there will be an issue once I have a chance to get hold of the manager, especially as he desperately wants me in the store. Just wondering if anyone else has had a situation like this, and how did they deal with it. If not what suggestions do you have?
