Restoring old house with lab confirmed asbestos products covering original walls
Post Body

So we are trying to restore our walls/ceilings back to the existing plaster. Looks like our house 1886 was remodeled at some point and they put textured asbestos paint on some plaster walls / ceilings directly. They also put in drywall in most other areas that has asbestos in the texture and joint compound.

We are going to hire a company to remove most if not all of it. I am worried abatement will further damage/remove the original walls even in the case of removing the drywall. Wife and I are fully prepared to repair plaster but it would suck to lose whole walls or damage original wood trim (trim is not on top of any asbestos, they just added to the wall without removing trim thankfully)

My question is this, what should I be expecting from an abatement company. Will they insist I have to remove the plaster/lathe walls underneath the texture paint/drywall as well? In other words is abatement something that can be precise or is it just wholesale removal of everything? The plaster is confirmed not to have asbestos.

Crossing my fingers we can save much of what exists under the asbestos products. Oh and we haven’t moved in yet so I’ve been thinking doing more than less so we don’t have to deal with it ever again.

Thank you in advance
