If you're having the dilemma of whether to work or browse reddit, let me help spin you to the dark side. It's time for another bangin' community interview thread!
How/when did you start running?
Pretty young, I was in middle school when I did my first road race. I had (well, still do have, she's still awesome!) a very athletic older sister and I took after a lot of things she did.
What are your PRs?
Mile 5:08
5K 19:05
10K 39:57
Half 1:26:45
Full 3:17:13 (on a downhill course)
Favorite shoes to train or race in?
Right now I am really loving my Altra Escalantes. I got to test them out for an article a friend was writing, and after some initial skepticism I got totally sold on these shoes. I cycle through several different types of shoes from workout to workout and usually I've just bought whatever was on sale that felt comfy, but these Altras just seem to be a tier above what I had gotten used to.
What's your next race?
UAE Healthy Kidney 10K. I got my 10K PR at this race last year, so we'll see if I'm in PR shape soon....
What is your favorite distance to race and why?
Well.. first reaction to this question would be the Mile or the Half Marathon... but I like pretty much everything in between. I really enjoy racing. Except full marathons. Those always involve significant physical and emotional pain every time I try to run them fast. At this point I want to get a BQ and run Boston once just so I never feel like I need to run another marathon again.
Of course if I do get a BQ and run Boston, my attitude about marathons will probably change.. :)
What are your goals this year?
I have 3 distances that I really would love to PR- Half Marathon, Mile, and 5k. 5K I'm so close to breaking 19, mile I am kinda close to breaking 5.... and my half marathon PR was from a race where I had to stop into a port-a-potty, so I think there's still more speed in my legs.
Proudest running accomplishment?
Oh goodness.. probably when I really truly broke my high school best time in the 5K. I am not 100% sure what my actual high school best time was, but it was around 19:45. I slightly beat that in a local community 5k, but then later ran a 19:30 during a time trial on a track. That was a couple years ago and now I'm even faster, basically the best shape of my life, running-wise.
Keep in mind I'm not exactly young, I graduated high school in 1996. :)
What do you do outside of running?
My job is working for an architectual lighting company, making custom lighting fixtures, specifying dimming systems, and just generally solving problems in people's lighting systems.
What other hobbies/interests do you have?
A ton. The biggest one (that ARTC folks would be familiar with) is photography. I've caught a couple meese out at the NYC marathon and Boston. I also spend way too much time on video games, play a couple instruments, like a variety of visual artsy things besides photography, I've gotten to wear a cosplay outfit I made on national television, I used to be more of a swimmer than a runner, and now I've started cycling too so I can do triathlons.. Plus back in the day I used to DJ at the occasional house party/club/rave, which is where my username comes from.
What is your favorite route/place to run?
Just over in NJ there's an area along the Hudson called the Palisades. It's gorgeous trail running. Varies from nice groomed paths to some pretty technical stuff, with lots of nature and nice views and even some foundations from old mansions from many decades ago.
Do you have a favorite run/race that you’ve ever done?
Well, I met my girlfriend at the Brooklyn Half Marathon in 2013, so that's going to be pretty tough to top!
If you could run anywhere in the world with anyone in the world, alive or dead, where would you run and who would you run with?
Oh geeze. Maybe have my pro-runner-crush Jenny Simpson show me around some awesome trails in the rocky mountains or something. Or, hey, can I go for a run on Mars with Matt Damon? That'd be cool, although I guess it's not "in the world..."
What do you think has been the greatest contributor to your success in running?
A strong desire to be better than I used to be!
What is your favorite post long run food?
Depending on the run- 'Hellgate wrap' from Brooklyn Bagel (a sort of egg/bacon/cheese/chipotle wrap thing) or a big 'ol cheeseburger and fries.
If you had a year to train, with no other distractions, how fast do you think you could get?
I think that might be what it would take to finally run a Boston qualifier! And probably also get to the time qualifying standard for NYC. I think I'd have to spend quite a lot of that year acclimating my body to higher training intensity so as not to injure myself. Just turned 40 and I'm not eager to start getting injured all the time.
Favorite subreddits?
Pretty boring. End up in /r/All a lot. Some of the maybe more unique ones-
/r/gamephysics /r/kerbalspaceprogram /r/programmerhumor /r/wewantplates /r/brushybrushy /r/superbowl
Origin of your username?
Used to spin records at parties. DnB mostly, but also sometimes house/trance/cheesy pop music.
Strava link if you use it?
