Post Body

After a brief hiatus last week we came running back faster than when you see the taco truck down the street.

So let's stop taco'in about it and get to the interview!

How/when did you start running?

I started running casually after I graduated from college and was no longer playing organized sports. (Also, my mom started running when I was about 10 or 11, so I did a couple of 5ks in middle school before deciding I hated running.) Starting out, I did what a lot of inexperienced runners do - run all out for as long as I could handle on each run. After I ran my first half marathon last year, I realized that I was training like an a**hole, discovered AR/ARTC, and decided I wanted to get smarter about my running.

What are your PRs?

  • 5K: 18:34
  • 10k: 39:56
  • Half marathon: 1:21:07*
  • Marathon: 3:02:58

*I got directed the wrong way on the course and only ran 12.8, so I've been calling that PR a 1:23

Favorite shoes to train or race in?

Love the Mizuno Hitogami for anything half marathon or shorter, but it's now discontinued so I'm looking for something new (NB 1400v5 maybe?). Long runs have been done in Kinvaras or the NB Vazee Pace.

What's your next race?

Illinois half marathon on April 28! And hopefully a 5k in the meantime if I can find one that works with my schedule.

What is your favorite distance to race and why?

I need to race more to be able to answer this question! My half marathon is strongest, so maybe that? I don't have enough raw speed to do really well in the 5k, and I don't like how much rides on a single race for the marathon. At least for a shorter race, if you get bad weather or run a bad race, you can try again.

What are your goals this year?

  • I want to match my official half PR in a race where I run a full 13.1 - time to get rid of that asterisk.
  • Sub3 in the marathon this fall.
  • Something fast in the 5k, which I'll figure out once I get a sense of fitness level this spring.

Proudest running accomplishment?

Probably the consistency I've been able to hit over the past 6-8 months - it feels good to know I can push my body and it can handle it. Race-wise, breaking 20 in the 5k felt like a big milestone.

What do you do outside of running?

Attorney.

What other hobbies/interests do you have?

Ooh, lots of things. I read a lot and love cooking, but I'm much better at cooking projects (like, pickling things or trying out unnecessarily complicated recipes) than actually preparing dinner every night - usually, my meals consist of either "things that go on tortillas" or "things that go on rice." I also play soccer a couple of times a week.

I've tried getting into gardening, but I seem to kill most things I try to plant. Might work on that this summer.

What is your favorite route/place to run?

Definitely the Chicago Lakefront Trail for weekend runs. On weekdays, I rotate through the same 3-4 routes - nothing too interesting.

Do you have a favorite run/race that you’ve ever done?

I think the Lakefront Marathon in Milwaukee. It's a small, really well-organized race and is super cheap for a marathon. I definitely recommend it if you're looking for a fall marathon in the Midwest.

If you could run anywhere in the world with anyone in the world, alive or dead, where would you run and who would you run with?

Good question! I think running with any of the Naz Elite runners would be really fun - they seem to have a really healthy approach to training.

What do you think has been the greatest contributor to your success in running?

I've never run competitively or on a team, but I think playing team sports through college taught me how to safely push my body and that I can handle some suffering in a race.

What is your favorite post long run food? Pizza, for sure. But since I usually run in the mornings, my favorite post long run food is probably a breakfast burrito or something involving hash browns.

If you had a year to train, with no other distractions, how fast do you think you could get? Will someone also clean up my diet during this year? Because that would make a difference. Anyway, I'm not really sure, but breaking 18 in the 5k would be cool.

Favorite subreddits?

Here mostly, and then I sometimes lurk on r/chicago and r/seriouseats

Origin of your username?

I was putting off a long run by lurking this subreddit, and started thinking about what I wanted to eat when I got home.
