I think romance is just a hyper idealized version of intimacy.
Like the core messages of spiritual texts like the Bible are good but human beings take them and twist them into something that is far and away from the original form. Does that make sense?
Its possible for intimacy and romance to exist separately. It's like believing in a higher power but being against organized religion.
Intimacy is really just existing in a space where you and another person can relax and be yourselves without judgdment. Romance is not a barrier to entry or a requirement for it.
You can have it without fluff and superfluous stuff.
