Hey folks, let's talk about a myth that I used to believe until I became a commander a few years back. This is a real important one, especially if you're dealing with issues in your CoC. The Inspector General (IG) is NOT some independent adjudication body that can solve all your problems. In fact, they work for the commander in your CoC and have four purposes: 1) teach and train 2) inspections 3) assistance and 4) investigations (as directed by their commander).
Now, don't get me wrong - IG can have a lot of influence. But after an IG complaint, they usually just give you some generic advice and move on. If you're dealing with a shitbird commander, then using IG as an additional counsel might be a good idea. But for most issues, it's probably better to just talk with your CoC directly.
That being said, if you're dealing with serious issues and your DIV CDR needs to get involved, IG can be a powerful tool. They can tell your commander how to stay in line with regulations, which can have a bigger impact than just talking things out face-to-face.
So yeah, IG is definitely a tool for conflict resolution with shitty leaders. But my best advice is to use them wisely. And now that my rant is over, who's ready to pour me a glass of bourbon? Cheers!
