Ok, so I know I’m gonna get hate for this, but hear me out. Why does it feel like people in the armwrestling world don’t realize that it’s not really a measure of someone’s actual, overall strength? I’m not saying armwrestling isn’t impressive, it is but it’s such a specific type of strength. It’s super focused on forearms, hands, and tendons, which are just small muscle groups ( tendons are not muscles ik) compared to what’s tested in other strength sports.
Now, I know many armwrestlers are really strong in lifts like bench press, overhead press, etc. That’s obvious, and I’m not denying it. Some armwrestlers are strong in general, but that’s because of them as individuals, not the sport itself. When you look at armwrestling as a sport, it’s still super specific and doesn’t test total body strength.
Compare that to strongman or powerlifting. Those sports test brute strength across most of the body, squats, deadlifts, atlas stones, whatever. They actually measure who’s strongest as a person. Armwrestling just doesn’t. And let’s be real, if you’re skipping leg training, you’re basically only strong in half your body anyway.
Strength is specific, I get that. But if we’re talking about who’s the strongest overall, armwrestling just isn’t a good metric. It’s a fun and technical sport, sure, but it’s not in the same league for determining who’s the strongest person in the room.
Powerlifting is in my opinion overrated for testing strength. Especially in weight classes it favors shorter guys with short levers and is limited to very specific movement patterns. You can be a great bencher and squatter but still have relatively weak grip and arm strength. Strongman is a better overall test of strength, but nowadays it's too focused on leg and back strength with too much helping aids (straps, tacky, deadlifting suits etc) . Old school strongman with more focus on grip and arms is my favorite strength test.
