Coming from an open source background I really don't understand all the hatred that flies around in this community. Most websites that make money these days use at least one open source library.
Software developers want to solve a problem once and open source minded ones share that solution to be used, built upon, fully changed, whatever. People find joy in others using their hard work and they build strong portfolios and garner a ton of respect from other developers using their work.
Why do I see all kinds of comments about people 'stealing' from one another. Is that just a modding culture thing? What can you really steal when the game is owned by Bohemia? Why would you not want your modification used as much as possible, or even improved as much as possible by putting it out there without constraints? In open source generally the only constriction put on developing is if you changed/improved the code you need to post it for free use too. Then you have a leap frog effect with a ton of forward progress and solid standards that are battle tested.
Why does this modding community insist on shooting itself in the foot instead of making progress together? Or am I just reading the wrong literature?
TL;DR Why does Arma seem to have such a dramatic modding community when it comes to unconditional sharing?
