Is essential known to be unreliable?

My essential cams (with a subscription) won't record anything outside, and I'm really disappointed. I've restarted the system, batteries are full, wifi connected, live feed available. If I bring a camera inside and dance in front of it I'll get footage, but nothing of use outdoors. After spending $100s and hours of time, I'm upset.

Is essential (VMC3050, 2nd Gen) known to be faulty this way? Has anyone had luck resolving this on a technical level or a customer service level (ie, returning the junk)?
