Trouble with GNOME and Budgie with external monitor
Post Body

Hi all,

I'm having an issue with my external monitor. I have a Dell E6320 with a monitor attached to the VGA port, and I'm currently using the monitor as my primary display with MATE desktop, and it Works flawlessly.

I would like however to use Budgie, which as you know is heavily dependent on GNOME. On Budgie or GNOME, the external monitor at first worked only with 1024x768 resolution, and setting it to 1920x1200 with xrandr or GNOME settings caused the monitor to go blank and the laptoo screen to move uncontrollably everywhere, at which point I had to change TTY and reboot.

I then googled and edited the correct monitor screen dimensions and set it as primary in .config/monitors.xml. After that, the resolution is correct after logging in, and external monitor is the primary display. BUT, there is no wallpaper on it, only white screen. On laptop screen there is wallpaper like it should be.

The way I got it to work was to open GNOME settings, and set the external display to primary and set the resolution, apply, then set it to primary and set the resolution again. And after I apply it for second time, it works like it should. Wallpaper appears to the monitor, and resolution is correct. But once I log out and back in, the settings are lost. I have to do it again every single time I log back in.

Is there some setting or file edit I'm missing here, does somebody have any ideas?
