What I don't understand, and maybe someone can clarify this for me, is that why it's OK to take plants that are growing in the wild, but a crime to take plants growing in the wild planted by a person. Wouldn't it be better (given a crime system) for it to be a crime to steal something that is someone's property?

I know that farms/houses/scarecrows are protected, so why the cognitive dissonance of the crime system?
