Personally, I love how the scene opens to focus on Vi's emotions. Vi is finally given the stage to air out what she really feels. She perceives her belief in Jinx as her biggest flaw. She feels like she has betrayed Caitlyn. She hits rock bottom and sees that she is all alone down there, despite her best intentions to help everyone she loves.
"I choose wrong every time" is such a powerful line from Vi, because you can feel her frustration with herself. Not with others, but with her self-perceived naiveté. And when she holds her head as she says "and now I've lost everyone", you can feel her resignation. She's lost her family, friends, and even Caitlyn.
But Caitlyn comes over and says that cryptic line about guards, and suddenly it all clicks for Vi.
I admit, it took me a couple tries to understand what the hell was going on, especially since I was getting too busy cheering for what happened next. But after replaying the conversation over and over, I realized Caitlyn's line also relates to their last conversation, their confrontation in the sitting room, where Vi asks Caitlyn "Who decides who gets a second chance?".
The answer? It's actually CaitVi.
First, Caitlyn has the power to give Jinx a second chance. As commander, she has the authority to pardon her for her crimes. Hell, she breaks the law by allowing Vi to help Jinx escape, all out of her love for Vi.
Second, Vi herself is given the agency to decide: will she forgive Caitlyn? Will she give Caitlyn a second chance? I'm definitely in camp "actions speak louder than words", so I'm all for the fact that Vi chooses to respond by just kissing Caitlyn and consummating their relationship right then and there. She is swept with emotion. The people she loves the most have finally given Vi agency, the direct ability to choose what she wants for herself.
As for the location, I've always been a fan of symbolism and irony. While it seems ludicrous to have sex in a jail cell, have things ever been normal for CaitVi? Their whole relationship has been dramatic and tense from the start. Additionally, I see the decision to set that scene in the scene as a liberating experience for Vi. For once, she has agency, despite being in a place similar to her Stilwater cell. For once, she has someone by her side, someone who wants her just as much as she wants them. Similar place, but the circumstances are so wonderfully different. Her traumatic memories of prison can be healed, starting with that moment with Caitlyn.
Memories are malleable. Memories can be reshaped to be less traumatic over time. That's what healing actually is. The jail scene is a big step for Vi's healing journey, and I'm so happy that the animators at Fortiche made those crucial decisions.
