Why’d it die?

Uncles favorite cherry blossom, NW Missouri.

First photo is fall of 2023. Spring of 23, uncle replaced the rock in this particular bed. Didn’t add any additional mesh, just refilled the river rock (2” river rock). Tree had been planted and healthy for ~20 years prior to the death.

Also dumps the hot tub in this general vicinity, but has done that every fall for about a decade.

Everyone always comments on how rocks ruin the roots - I guess my question is, how do trees grow in rocky terrain in the mountains? Often you see pines and even Rocky Mountain maples growing on rocky scree fields
