Mowing the leaves today, I noticed a maple sapling (freeman, I think) had planted itself in a wilder part of my lawn near where another tree fell a year or two ago. Problem is, it's what I'd classify as "bent as hell". The "trunk" starts below the dirt and it runs an inch or two horizontally before straightening out over the course of a few feet in a very curvy way.
I'd like to let it grow if possible since I've always wanted a maple in my yard.
I'm assuming something like this might happen in nature regularly, and I don't need a perfect tree, but I also don't want one that's growing horizontally or one that's going to suffer from it or something.
Should I do anything? If left to its own devices will the maple still grow properly?
