I'm likely removing the large, mature white poplar in my front yard due the roots invading the driveway and foundation. It hurts my soul a bit having to kill it, but for the good of the property it'll have to go - I atleast plan to use all of the wood in my house and in the garden though. My question is how would I best replace the niche it fills in the local habitat. We have a ton of neighborhood squirrels that enjoy it and always have a number of nests, especially in winter - the local rabbits enjoy it's shade as well. I plan to plant a few smaller trees on the property, as well as start a garden to support the wildlife in the neighborhood. What would the best course of action here be?
