Trainee exam?

After doing the trainee qualifying education courses is there a state test one needs to take to get the trainee certificate? Or does the state test only apply when one is done with their hours and applying for the certified general or certified residential license? I am in California and am going to start taking the AI courses, ultimately I want to become a certified general. I am aware of the tests after almost every course. Thank you everyone in advance for your valuable time.
