Is it safe to use my MacBook without an Apple ID?

I had to format my hard drive because I had a corrupt Windows partition I never removed correctly. At the time, I didn't have enough space to upgrade to Mojave.

I was able to reclaim the hard drive space and install Mojave but I forgot my old phone number was on my account. Of course an expired credit card, too.

I'm going through the recovery process/lock out right now.

I've never ran antivirus software but I need my Apple ID to install all the security patches, right?

How risky is using an unpatched version of Mojave? Thanks!
