Hello everyone!
We have requested a call with Apple specialist regarding their "understanding" and "implementation" of EU DMA.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKl_u5bOsO8
Highlights of this open dialog:
Can we run alternative marketplace if we have no 1 000 000 EUR equity warranty so Apple will allow it to exist*?*
It's specific, we can give you email of someone in Apple to talk regarding this (however, we still doesn't get any, we will update this article if it happens).
All stuff will work via Apple MDM APIs and solutions. How can small company become MDM vendor with less than 50 employees? (we tried, but were declined)
Probably you don't need it, as for you there is probably no path to be a marketplace [approved by Apple].
Apple requires marketplaces to provide specified by them level of “privacy” and “security” and sets this 1 000 000 EUR threshold and other limitations. [No matter to say that we had zero problems with users privacy and security in our entire lifetime.]
[Why is security and privacy evaluated in money and restrictions and not in expertise, experience and professionalism - this is rhetoric question]
Why should Apple care, track and control what user does with their own devices? As soon as users bought a device - it's their property and they are free to do anything they want with it.
[We've lost some audio there, but were talking about a) unlocking of bootloader, so users can use any operating system and do whatever they want b) if bootloader is locked and users forced to use iOS, Apple must to allow to run any apps on operating system - as it is what defines “operating system" - a software to run other apps]
Why do we need to pay Core Technology fee? As Apple forces to use iOS and it's APIs, using their monopoly to restrict development of other replacement APIs by independent companies.
[We are giving example of gatekeeping in APIs, e.g. Push Notifications, when you need to pay at least $100 to Apple to send push notifications to iOS devices]
First 1 000 000 installs are not charged, they said… no other answer.
How can developer publish an app without usage of Apple APIs?
It is not allowed on iOS in EU. It is allowed only via marketplace that must to be approved by Apple. Did you get it? [She forgot to mention that Apple will still verify every app even on 3rd party marketplace, according to their documentation]
Our conclusion - Apple's position is clear. It is still monopoly, still uses their power to dictate companies and developers what to do, using metaphoric “security” and “privacy” concerns of users, sadly evaluated in money and fees that need to be paid to Apple. This is not how EU DMA should be implemented.
We are continuing to develop next stage of appdb with app publishing, APIs replacements.
If you are developer and want to release your app on appdb (with supporting of different licensing types, e.g. per device or per user, in-app purchases, subscriptions and all other available API replacements from us instead of Apple), you can do it soon. If you are developer, lawyer or payment processing company in European Union, feel free to contact us via [](mailto:[email protected]) - to get access to private beta of all upcoming features.
