What is better getting kills or placing higher in ranked

I am new to ranked so im in low silver but me and a buddy of mine are argueing on if getting kills is petter or if placing higher is better. I think placing higher should be the priority since it gaurentees rp combat does not unless you are highly proficient at it. When i look at the math placing top 5 overal gaurentees good placement rp plus what ever combat you do get is still an added bonus. His math is just get into as many fights as you can to get combat xp but anything after 6 kills assists rp gets reduced. Anyone who knows the math please let me know what you think.
