UPDATE: lmao got passed over for the fucking newbie. I'll let them give their reasoning before I throw my name tag at them and walk out. Fuck this, should've started unionizing years ago.
I work part time retail at a big corporation in Canada, been in the same position for 7 years with no real interest in moving up until now as I'm struggling with rent and bills. My current position entails working in the warehouse and on the sales floor stocking shelves and helping customers. The promotion entails maintaining a department or "world" and covering tills/cash outs on top of working the warehouse and on the sales floor helping customers.
I'm the senior most team member to apply for the position, the others have been with this particular store for maybe half of what I've worked collectively. This store has also lost almost half it's senior staff in the course of 2 weeks back in August due to lack of hours/pay and bad management. The only reason I've applied for this promotion is because I haven't had any luck applying for full-time work elsewhere.
The position is a $0.50 raise with about the same hours and benefits I currently have. The last coworker at my level that applied for a position like this was "guaranteed" the position, but was passed over for a cashier who didn't even stay long after getting it. My coworker quit almost immediately after.
This store does not have enough experienced workers to afford losing any more, so I guess my question is this:
If offered the position, how/should I haggle for better pay and if I'm passed over for one of the younger employees should I just quit on the spot? I'm not getting enough pay either way to support myself.
