This was right before the pandemic, and was the reason I quit the job. The owner, my boss, took part in several business networking clubs, going so far as to have multiple seats within the same club.
I was being groomed by fellow associates who did these business networking meetings in the past, to take a role at the club without having any additional compensation for the time and effort that goes into these business networking meetings. It was to be a large commitment: weekly meetings at 6am, outside group get-togethers, developing taliored sales pitches every week. Would have equated to about an extra 3-4 hours of work each week.
I confronted my boss to clarify what it was he was wanting. I asked what kind of pay increase I could expect. He tried to justify not compensating anything extra by using the line "networking will give you even more pay than a raise I could give you". I quit.
