My 17 year old son just got his first job, and in helping him not get screwed over with paperwork and such I got curious as far as minimum wage goes (he's getting min 10c) so I looked it up and was shocked at some of these!
I listed ever state below (from website Minimum Wage Rates by State 2022 (minimum-wage.org) )
The things that shocked me the most:
- there are 20 States still at the federal minimum wage....I understand that cost of living varies greatly from state to state, but still!
- Only 12 states raise their minimum wage yearly
- Washington State, the state I live in, has the 2nd highest minimum wage in the country (only beaten by DC) Hawaii, which I know has a much higher cost of living that Washington is a third lower than us!?
Educate yourself about your state's minimum wage! Also, Individual cities can have a higher minimum wage than the state (here in Washington the state minimum is $14.49, Seattle has a minimum of $17.29 and Seatac has a $17.59 minimum)
If you're a server, and you live in one of those fucked up states where your hourly is $2.13 (17 fucking states, plus several more where it's only a little bit higher!!!?!?!!) , know that by law, your Employers must make up the difference between the federal minimum wage and the service minimum wage ($2.13) if the server does not make at least the federal minimum wage (at the end of the day they have to pay you the difference!)
