For the past decade, Iāve concurrently worked as both a freelance copywriter and a physical therapist. I have college degrees, but no BA in English, as requested by a job posting from Mayo looking for a health copywriter. Figured Iād apply anyway and sell myself through my cover letter, samples, and professional website. No dice, according to Mayo, as I donāt meet the ābasic requirements.ā Me, sans English degree but with a portfolio full of satisfied clients and their projects, as well as a practicing healthcare clinician. I more than meet your ābasic requirementsā and could easily turn out your content, but alas, so was not meant to be.
Pfft. I could care less.
Wake up, employers. Open your eyes. The landscape has changed, and should you wish to attract - and retain - top talent, so must you.
It begins by letting go of antiquated hiring practices and ideals that youāve grasped ever so tightly for far too long.
