Job recruiting sites such as Indeed are pay to win.
Post Body

So I’ve been lurking on this subreddit for a while now. One thing I haven’t seen anyone really discussing is how sites like indeed (using them as my go to in this post) are stacked against workers and in fact are pay to win.

I was searching for a new job while working at a pizza place about five-six months ago. I was sick and tired of being over worked by incompetent management and seeing 10 drivers scheduled out at the same exact time on a Saturday because management was too lazy to actually mess with the schedule and give their workers an expectation of when they were going to be able to go home. So I decided it was time for a career swap. I had been taking paralegal classes online in my spare time and was pretty close to a degree. I started to buff my resume up and apply for entry level receptionist and legal assistant positions on indeed. Most posts said things like “willing to train” or “no experience needed” I applied to around 20-40 local law firms trying to get a foot in the door. I never heard back from a single place. After getting a bit desperate I found an add on Indeed for their resume writing feature. You can pay between $50-100 and someone who indeed has contracted will write or review your resume. I said sweet that sounds awesome! And tried it, one thing they talked about in the add is the “buzz” words that the resume writers use to flag your application in undress own system. Basically when they update your resume they add in these words jumping your application to the top of the queue. Which is awesome if you can afford to do so, and I did. Within 24 hours of applying with the new resume to 2-5 positions on the site. I got a call back from a firm. Within a week I had a new job at a firm. The updated resume was not much different than my original one that I created with the help of my paralegal professor in college. But I certainly saw a big difference in callbacks.

I was fine with this until I thought more about how unfair it is that people looking for jobs are at a disadvantage considering most don’t have $100 to drop just to get a position.

This has been my experience using the indeed resume. Hope it was informative! Thanks for reading.
