If companies don't want to pay a living wage for employees and think the solution to that is to make customers check themselves out then DON'T PAY A HANDFUL OF EMPLOYEES TO JUST STAND AND STARE AT THE CUSTOMERS WHO ARE CHECKING THEMSELVES OUT! ESpevially if they are going to hawkeye you and make you feel like you're stealing.
I get it, people steal. Not all people steal and if you make me feel like that I'm not coming back to your store. If you are going to stare at me with your arms crossed with distrust on your face or continually look over my shoulder to make sure I'm not skipping or cheating, then JUST CHECK ME OUT YOURSELF! We'll both feel better and I'm pretty sure you'll be a lot quicker than me.
Back to online shopping for me and if any corporate folks are reading: You're penny pinching in the wrong areas. Pay your employees well and remember you rely on your customers for repeat business. You have it backwards with the number of self check outs open. Keep a couple and bring back human beings to interact with help your customers. Take a peek at Trader Joe's.
