i wanted to bring a spotlight to the masterpiece that is fruits basket. i’m rewatching the series, and season 2 episode 15 inspires this post.
i relate to a lot of the characters in fruits basket, but boy… yuki’s experience always pokes a raw spot. ultimately, one deeply personal reason for being a militant antinatalist is displayed and evidence by yuki’s story: his mother used him as a tool and essentially sold him for her benefit. the person he was “sold” to basically dedicated their time to stripping him of any confidence and self-worth. and when he would reach out to others for help, he was ignored and people looked the other way, confirming and cementing his self-hatred.
in the episode yuki says, “what’s the point? my words have no power or meaning. they’re fragile things that die before they even reach you. i remember thinking, if it’s always going to be that way, i might as well never speak again.”
hearing that simultaneously broke my heart and pissed me off. i believe this with all my soul: it is one of the cruelest things to raise a person that feels like they have no voice. pure evil.
everyone, say it with me: JUST GET A ROBOT!!!!
