I’m trying to help my friend who is depressed and unhappy with his life. He says he has always hated his life and it’s just got worse and worse. we are post college age. I’ve always been supportive of his mental health issues and have tried to help how I can. I don’t fully know how anti depressants work so I’m trying to get advice from people who have taken them so I can understand better and help him. He says he doesn’t think anti depressants will work cause he just hates life and nothing interests him and he has no goals so that won’t change anything. He has been suicidal and says he would probably kill himself if it was easier. And he does self harm here and there. He also has severe anxiety and overthinks everything and it makes doing almost anything impossible for him. He can’t even go out in public without feeling bad about himself and getting super sad/upset with himself. He’s tried therapy and quit after about a month cause he said it doesn’t work. I’ve finally talked him into getting and trying anti depressants. He hasn’t got them yet. he says everything in life is too much to handle and he doesn’t think that will change with anti depressants. I don’t want him to try them once and if they don’t work he quits them. I’ve heard that sometimes you need to find the right pill/ dosage that will work for you and it can take some time. I’ve told him that but since he doesn’t think there gonna work already I don’t think he’s gonna put much effort into trying different pills/ dosages. I guess I just want some advice from people with experience battling depression how I can help him. He seems to think his life sucks and everything in life is unbearable and always will because that’s just how his mind works. Will anti depressants help him or does he need different help. Hoping someone who has felt like this and gotten out of it or just someone who understands mental health well can help. Drop a reply or feel free to message me thanks!
