This is something that I thought I would share here. This was about 9-10 years ago. I made some bad choices in my life, but at least I was able to fix this one.
Around 10 years ago I was going from one crappy job to the next. Going to college didn't help. At the time I was unemployed and trying really hard to find something that was less toxic, paid more and I might be able to make a career out of. I think the most money I made was $9/hr. I suffer from treatment resist major depression, low self esteem and anxiety. I was the prime target for a MLM Hun to swoop in with promises of a better life. The man that recruited me found me on a job hunting website, saw the shitty jobs I had listed as prior employment and I'm she just knew that I was ripe for the picking!
I received an e-mail from Mr. Hun, I can't remember exactly what it said, but I believe it was vague information about his insurance business and he wanted to a phone interview. I did the phone interview, never once thinking that this wasn't anything but a legit business and a great opportunity to finally be making some real money and move out.
We were instructed that we needed to have, I think, 7 people with a preference for young couples to have "training" meetings with. Mr. Hun would go through the whole spiel trying to sell them life insurance, and if he did actually make a sale, I would get a small percentage as commission. I figured, that's how insurance sales work, must how this is going to be.
Unfortunately for Mr. Hun, most people I knew were as poor off as myself, so it was mostly meetings with people who were retired, already had life insurance and didn't want anymore, or at one point actually knew more about the products then he did. This was a couple that my parents knew since high school. Mr. R was very much getting red flags from Mr. Hun. (put a pin here)
In the mean time, I'm going to these meetings that were nothing but motivational cult lectures from the top Mr. Hun of the "office". They actually had an office, and thank GOD it's no longer there. Anyway, I thought I needed to take notes, and record the "meeting" so I could be the best at my job. I was so into this and I wanted to succeed, even though I didn't see one red cent yet. At one of the meetings, I was congratulated for having made 5 meetings for my "training" goals in just 2 weeks. No one else that was being brain washed had done that. I was very proud of myself for once. I was riding high and felt invincible!
Mr. R called me out of the blue one afternoon and asked me if I had done any research into the company I was "working" for. I said I hadn't. He insisted that I look into them, because they were very much a pyramid scheme. I hung up with him. I was actually feeling quite concerned, and even scared that I was involved in something illegal. That's when I found out all I needed to know about that horrible company.
I e-mailed Mr. Hun immediately afterwards telling him that I was not longer going forward with this, and thank you for the opportunity, etc. I in no way was mean or confronting in my wording, and kept it professional. About half hour later Mr. Hun calls me, and I will never forget this, asks me "Who have I been talking to and what have they been telling you?!" I just stood my ground, (thanks for the new confidence guys!), and told him I was done and hung up.
I was very fortunate that I had someone tell me to look into the company, because I had no money, I had debt and I could never afford to dig myself deeper. I am just forever grateful the friend of my family that helped me get out before it was too late. Please don't give up the good fight.
EDIT: I forgot to add that Mr. Hun told me he had left the Post Office to join Primerica. Another reason I thought it was a great opportunity. Who would leave such a good job with amazing benefits? Funny thing is, after this, I got hired on with the Postal Service and spent 7 years working there. Best pay and benefits I ever had! Now I'm working in the Semiconductor industry in a clean room. (Thankful for that during the height of COVID...)
