I recently posted about my in-laws using my s/o's identity to create a fake dowline. Today they got back into the country by way of the airport in my city and asked us to supper.
The whole time they talked about their conference, the revolutionary products, the life changing opportunites. That this business is going to fulfill their dreams of building a carriage house so they can have a passive income in their retirement. That the company is going to pay for them to take a trip to the Bahamas as soon as they get 12 more recruits. How sad they were that we weren't willing to jump on this opportunity to be our own boss. How we should reach out to our friends and coworkers and how easy it would be for us to make a ton of money.
My MIL was even flirting with the waittress and when we paid for our meal she cornerned her with a pitch. The waittress looked extremely uncomfortable because she obviously didn't want to be rude to a customer as she let MIL give her her contact info.
The whole thing was extremely cringe, having to nod along and appear interested, trying to think of a clever way to dodge their attempts at persuasion to either join the business or give them the contacts of our friends and family. The craziest part is that this is their 4th MLM in 10 years and they still buy it hook line and sinker.
It's kind of like witnessing a little kid who has this idea of how he's going to make a lot of money using those scam apps that 'pay you' to test mobile games, and you don't want to crush their dreams. You try telling them it doesn't really work but they have to find out for themselves. Except these are fully grown adults and they are spending real money. It's just cringey, sad, awkward and painful to sit through. Fuck I hate MLMs.
