My group of friends, who have known each other since elementary school, get together every couple of months. Last weekend we met at one friend's house before we went to dinner. While waiting for the rest of the ladies, we were chitchatting, and she mentioned that she started on a new drink and pill combo to help her migraines.
Immediately my MLM senses starting tingling, and I asked what company it was.
"It's Plexus." Ugh.
I got super matter-of-fact and said that A) She shouldn't take that, there's nothing wrong with your gut, B) It might not be appropriate for a nursing mother (which she is), and C) It's a pyramid scheme, and I hope her friend who sells it leaves before she looses too much money.
I was probably a little harsh.
I dropped it after she defended her friend, saying that she "just won a trip to Mexico" and was doing really well with the company, plus I didn't want to start a big argument on a night of fun.
Today, I sent her a message on FB:
Hey, sorry if I sounded really harsh about the Plexus stuff you're taking on Saturday, I'm just worried for your health.
The company itself is a pyramid scheme, with people making the most money from signing up new people under them, not by selling the products. In fact, the products only exist so that the company doesn't fit the legal definition of a pyramid scheme.
The drink/pills/products haven't been shown to cure anything, and the FDA actually sent Plexus a letter stating that they can't make any such claims on their website. I've recently been learning more and more about this and other pyramid scheme companies, and I don't want you to get hurt.
Here is the FDA's warning letter to them: https://www.fda.gov/ICECI/EnforcementActions/WarningLetters/ucm411287.htm
I'm not trying to be negative or to keep you form getting help for you migraines, I just love you and don't want anything to happen.
Was I too harsh? Not harsh enough? I really don't want her or her baby to be hurt by this dubious product, not to mention the money she could be spending on useful things. I hope I can help her see the truth.
