Why do people mimic accents or speech patterns during conversations?

Post Body
I’ve noticed that sometimes when I’m talking to people with different accents I subconsciously start mimicking the way they talk without even realizing it. My friends have pointed it out to me a few times, and I’ve seen other people do it too, so I know I’m not the only one. It’s not intentional, and I’m definitely not trying to mock anyone, but I’m a bit worried it might come off that way. 😅
Would love to hear your thoughts or experiences with this!
