See the problem is that the people who're most likely to agree with this already fucking hate him for a plethora of other statements so all this does is alienate people on the more leftward fringe.
Out of someone like Darth Ratzinger this would've done nothing but strengthen the office amongst the core audience but as-is this just comes across as weirdly inconsistent.
Personally I have no horse in this race but the guy really needs better advisors.
