UK Anime News Roundup - August 2017: Scotland Loves Anime and Kotatsu Festival film lineups, UK Premieres of Masaaki Yuasas' "The Night is Short, Walk on Girl" and "Lu Over the Wall", and Your Name home video release details!
Post Body

Hello, and welcome to the UK Anime News Roundup for August 2017! This month we have a few important theatrical announcements to cover, including film lineups for Scotland Loves Anime and Kotatsu Festival. I've also attached a link to the results from last months reader survey, I'd like to make that a semi-regular effort to measure changes in data over time, so a new version will probably run at the start of next year. Let's crack on.

  • In the interest of saving myself the effort of replicating what I did earlier this month, you can check out the results on my Twitter here. Imgur version

Home Video & Streaming News

  • Anime Limited

    • Anime Limited have announced their release plans for Your Name. The film will be released on November 6th on standard DVD and Blu-ray, and as a Collectors Edition Steelbook, which will contain the DVD, Bluray, and soundtrack CD (JP songs). There will also be a Deluxe Edition released in early December, however the contents of that version are currently awaiting approval from Japan and so haven't been announced. The film will be available on the discs JP subbed (with JP songs) and Eng dubbed (with Eng songs). There is no version of the film with English audio and Japanese songs available..
    • Anime Limiteds' Q4 lineup has now been released through Amazon, including some new shows. Ajin: Demi-Human, Ajin: Compel, Chrono Crusade, Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, Peacemaker Kurogane and The Testament of Sister New Devil are now due for release in the UK. You can check out the other release dates for previously announced AL titles in Q4 at the link provided.
    • Viceland (Sky 153 and NowTV) will be airing the following films as part of their partnership with AL. Patema Inverted: Tues 12th Sep 9PM. Letter to Momo: Tues 19th Sep 9PM. Perfect Blue: Tues 26th Sep 9PM.
  • Manga UK

    • Manga have announced details of two upcoming deluxe editions they will be releasing. Beyond the Boudary -I'll be here- will include a rigid box, the films on both DVD and Blu-ray (Dubbed and subbed), a poster and several art cards. In This Corner of the World will include the film on DVD and Blu-ray (dub and sub), a rigid case, several art cards and a production booklet.
    • A Certain Magical Index: The Movie – The Miracle of Endymion has been delayed until Spetember 18th. Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto has been delayed until November 27th.
  • MVM Entertainment

    • MVM will be releasing a combined Log Horion collectors edition containing Season 1 & 2 on Novemebr 27th. This will include a special art box and art cards. There will be a standard DVD version of this release later next year.
    • MVM have suffered a glitch that resulted in some pre-orders accidentaly being cancelled on Amazons system. If you have active Amazon pre-orders for MVM titles, you should check the status of the order on your account, if it is showing as cancelled, you may need to put in a new order.
  • StudioCanal

    • StudioCanal will be releasing the Studio Ghibli/Polygon Pictures production Ronja and the Robbers Daughter on Blu-ray and DVD as a complete set. This will include an English dub, sub is not confirmed yet, and will be the series first international home video release.
  • Altitude Films

    • Altitude have acquired the UK rights to the new Studio Ponoc film Mary and the Witches Flower and have announced a dub is in the works which will star Kate Winslet and Jim Broadbent. I would assume a theatrical release will be in the works for this film at some point as well.

Theatrical News

  • The schedule for the Edinburgh leg of Scotland Loves Anime 2017 has been announced as follows.

    • Mon 16th October - Your Name (English Dub)
    • Tues 17th October - A Silent Voice (English Dub)
    • Wed 18th October - Resident Evil: Degeneration (English Dub)
    • Thursday 19th October - Resident Evil: Vendetta (English Dub)
    • Friday 20th October - Eureka Seven: Hi-Evolution Movie 1, Tokyo Godfathers, The Night is Short, Walk on Girl, Battle Royale (Listed under the Filmhouse Uncanny valley Season instead of SLA.)
    • Saturday 21st October - Venus Wars, Fireworks, Lu Over the Wall, Tokyo Ghoul - Live Action
    • Sunday 22nd October - Kizumonogatari - Part III, Mind Game, Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis
    • Note that this is not likely to be the full lineup, there is still possible space in the Filmhouse schedule for two more films to be added, in a Friday 1PM slot or a Sunday 6PM slot. The festival director has confirmed that they are still trying to secure rights to No Game No Life from Japan, so it is a likely candidate for one of these slots. Fate/Stay Night: Heavens Feel has been ruled out definitively as subtitles will not be available until November, however they will try and arrange screenings if possible, possibly as an additional SLA branded event.
    • Glasgows schedule is yet to be announced, however past experience would lead me to expect that the line up of films will be smaller, nearly all films that will also be at Edinburgh, with possibly one or two unique films. No way to know for sure until Glasgow is announced properly though. Weekend Passes are now on sale for £60 Full Price / £45 Concession / £35 15-25 Card. Confirms that Glasgow will have 8 screenings over the 13th - 15th October.
  • Kotatsu Festival has had its lineups announced as follows.

    • Cardiff - Friday 29th September - The Night is Short, Walk on Girl
    • Cardiff - Saturday 30th September - Napping Princess, Your Name, Genocidal Organ, Belladonna of Sadness

    • Aberystwyth - Friday October 28th - Napping Princess, Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale, Genocidal Organ, Mind Game
  • The UK Premiere of The Night is Short, Walk on Girl will be taking place at the Glasgow Film Theatre on September 9th, as a joint presentation by SLA and the Glasgow Youth Film Festival. Director Masaaki Yuasa will be attending for a Q&A session after the screening as well, and as usual, I will provide a transcript if no one else has by next month. (Edit:10/9/17 - I forgot to take my notebook, but if I see the Q&A posted elsewhere I will provide a link.) There are still tickets available here. There will also be a screening and Q&A on September 11th at the Picturehouse Central in London.

  • Lu Over the Wall will have it's UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival, where it is in competition. There will be two screenings, one at BFI Southbank on October 14th, and one at Prince Charles Cinema on October 15th. Tickets here.

  • Manga UK will also be presenting a film at London Film Festival, the Chinese animation Big Fish & Begonia (Da Yu Hai Tang) This is a first time work by B&T Studio, co-produced with South Koreas' Studio Mir (Prev Works: Korra/Voltron). Tickets are available fot the screening at BFI Southbank on October 8th here.

  • Glasgow Youth Film Festival will be hosting a screening of The Ancient Magus Bride on September 23rd, in partnership with SLA and Crunchyroll. Tickets available from the Glasgow Film Theatre website.

  • The new film Pokemon: I Choose You will be released in UK cinemas on November 5th and 6th this year. Tickets on sale soon.

    • Eureka Seven: Hi Evolution - Q1 2018.
  • I need your help!! I can't keep track of every cinema that may screen anime by myself. If you know of any other screenings that will be taking place, or if you have a local cinema you can check upcoming listings for, please let me know via PM or the comments. There may well be screenings organised by local independent cinemas that I miss by myself.
