With the recent Best Anime by year thread, a lot of discussion has been going on how accurately we should take those results, especially regarding 2016. People have been saying that the system used relies too heavily on popularity, while others think popularity should play a big factor in what determines the best show of the year.
I think on /r/Anime, we can sort this out by doing a properly thought out contest where we factor in multiple things using data gathered from polls in order to determine our favorite series of the year. I have come up with a system that will give us the data to do so.
The polls
The polls will be made as following: Out of a list of all 2016 shows, submitters will select which 2016 shows they have and haven't watched, so we can see which shows were overall the most watched in the year.
In the second section of the poll, submitters will be asked to choose a set amount of favorites of the year; their top 3, 5 or more (depending on what number we decide on) shows of the year. These will be their favorites.
Now that for each show we have gathered the amount of watchers, and the amount of those watchers that favorited it, we can gather stats. With these numbers we can decide the most watched series, the most favorited ones and the ones that have the highest percentage of favorites.
Gathering this data all together, we can devise multiple lists to determine the top something most watched shows, the top something percentually highest favorites shows, and a combination of the two.
Using this system, we can get more accurate results that we can then list alongside one another for each show and give us the numbers on the things listed above. Other questions could also be included, so if you have any suggestions let me know! The system isn't perfected yet, so if you have any suggestions for improvements share those as well!
So, is there any interest in a proper "Best shows of 2016" competition to see what /r/Anime thinks and to decide who has the least shit taste overall? If there's enough positive feedback I'll set up the poll, and as soon as things have settled and the fall season has finished in little over a week we can vote!
So, what do you think? Any interest?
