I need some help. This has been in my head for literally years now. I got to scratch this itch.

When I was a kid in the early 90s, my dad used to take us to the video rental store. It wasn’t a chain, we only saw each other a couple days a week.

I would rent this anime, and I would love to find it again.

It was old I think when I rented it. I’d guess late 80s perhaps?

It was set in space. Human characters that I remember.

There were two or more waring factions, each with lots of ships and home planets (I think).

Each faction had large carriers/cruisers. The main character was a kid, all his comrades were older than him I’m pretty sure.

Main character was white with black hair?

There was a blonde white girl, a black muscular guy, and another dude with glasses.

What made this kid special was that he would fly out of the carrier on the back of his “gundam”. Sort of like surfing it? He had a unique connection to it. It was sentient I believe.

He would then enter through its back, and pilot it.

I know the details are sparse, and it’s probably older than 90% of the folks who will see this post…

But tonight just hit me, and I really wanna find it. I spent over an hour with ChatGPT trying to track it down. I just couldn’t nail it down.

Any ideas?
