Cannot resolve method 'getInstance' in 'FirebaseAuth' for Firebase

When I am on step 4 of setting up Firebase in my Android app, I enter this:
private FirebaseAuth mAuth;
Which is fine. But when I enter this:
mAuth = FirebaseAuth.getInstance();
I get the Cannot resolve method 'getInstance' in 'FirebaseAuth' error.
