Why did Cyrus not want Lysander the Spartan he trusted and respected the most to come with him on his campaign for the throne of Persia? Do you think he even asked him? Has always baffled me.
On a side note can anyone recommend any modern biographies of Lysander I canβt seem to find any
Cyrus probably would have wanted him there, but Lysander was a member of the Spartan assembly in good standing and wrapped up in the succession intrigues playing out in Sparta at the time. He was a close adviser to the recently ascendant King Agessilaus. Sparta also didn't get officially involved with Cyrus until he was already marching south, sending Cherisophus to meet Cyrus' army on their way out of Anatolia in 401. Plus, tensions in Greece were already rising toward the Corinthian War. Lysander just wasn't available for a relatively minor commitment hundreds of miles away.
As for biographies, I'm not aware of anything in English. How's your French?
